Basic Food Hygiene

Spoilt Food

Food can become ’spoilt’. It is not always harmful but is still deemed unfit for consumption and may result in complaints or damage to reputation. Food can be eaten after a ‘Best Before’ date but it is likely that it has deteriorated in colour, taste or smell. Higher risk foods that have a ‘Use By’ date are more at risk of causing harm and should not be consumed after this date.

Effective management and stock control can prevent food from being kept past these dates. Stock rotation, staff awareness and regular date checks are key in preventing food past it’s date from being used.
