COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and Safety)

8 Steps Of Complying With COSHH

The following 8 steps need to be followed to comply with current COSHH regulations..

  • Assessing the risk
Assess the risks to health from hazardous substances used in, or created by your workplace activities
  • Decide what precautions are needed
You must not carry out work which could expose your employees to hazardous substances, without first considering the risks and necessary control measures. In addition to identifying what else you need to do to comply with the COSHH regulations
  • Prevent or control
Your risk assessment should identify control measures to (where possible) prevent exposure. Where prevention of exposure is not possible all reasonably practicable steps should be taken to manage and control the residual risk
  • Ensure that identified control measures are implemented and maintained
Ensure that the identified control measures are implemented; monitored and reviewed on a regular basis by a competent person
  • Monitor exposure
Ensure that appropriate arrangements are in place to monitor employee’s exposure to hazardous substances. Records should be maintained
  • Carry out required health surveillance
Carry out required health surveillance: where your assessment has identified the need; or where the COSHH regulations sets specific requirements
  • Prepare plans and procedures to deal with accidents: incidents and emergencies
Establish safety management systems; to deal with accidents, Incidents and near misses, involving hazardous substances
  • Ensure employees are properly informed, trained and supervised
Provide your employees with suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training; consideration should also be given to any required levels of supervision
