COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health and Safety)

Step 2 – Deciding What Precautions Are Needed

Once employers have identified the risks present in the workplace, they will then decide on the action that is required to remove the risks or reduce them. Employers must:

  • Try to eliminate the use of the hazardous substance by substituting it for a less hazardous product.
  • Check that any control systems work and are effective in the workplace to safeguard employee’s health.
  • Consider if the substance used by employees can be absorbed through the skin.
  • Decide what further action is required if they conclude there are risks to health, action must be taken to protect all employees’ and other employee’s health.
