Mechanical Aids
When completing manual handling tasks there are a variety of mechanical aids available to assist you which can significantly reduce the risk of injury. These include:
- Sack barrow
- Forklift truck
- Trolleys
- Pallet truck
- Wheelbarrow
Manual handling tasks that involve heavy or awkwardly shaped loads will require the use of a mechanical aid. It is required that any individual who uses a mechanical aid is competent and has been trained how to use it.
All mechanical aids provided must be suitable for the environment in which they are to be used. Let’s take a quick look at the recommendations for the use of trolleys and hand carts.
Trolleys & hand carts
- Place heavier items at the bottom of the trolley or cart
- Never stack objects so high that they obstruct your view, make sure you can see any obstacles on the route
- It’s important that the items are secure, so they won’t fall off
- Aim to push the load rather than pull – keeping your back in its natural position, with knees bent and elbows in
- Lean in the same direction you are pushing
- Don’t be tempted to run – move at a steady walking pace
- If the route includes an incline or ramp, the force on the load will increase – always ask for help
- Make sure that the trolley or cart is in good condition and well maintained, particularly the wheels as they will provide a smooth journey
