Manual Handling

Lifting Safely – 2. Adopt A Stable Position

Prior to lifting the load it is important to make sure you are correctly positioned over the load:

  • Stand with your feet apart making sure you have good balance. It’s important to make sure that you remain relaxed. When the body is tense it is less flexible and more prone to injury.
  • Ensure sure you are standing close enough to the load to have its centre of gravity as close to your body as possible.
  • Try to position your feet along the sides of the load shoulder width apart. It’s most important find a position that is comfortable for yourself, without putting your back at risk of injury.
