Manual Handling

Lifting Safely – 3. A Good Grip

Once you are correctly in position…

  • Lower yourself down to the load by bending at the knees and make sure you keep your back in its natural position without tensing
  • Breathe in a natural pattern and keep your body in a relaxed posture, it is important that you don’t hold your breath.
  • Don’t overstretch to grip the load.
  • Grip hold of the load by the hands using the base of your fingers. If you try to lift a load with the tip of your fingers, all the pressure is concentrated on the ends rather than the muscles designed for the job.
  • Do not stoop or squat as you prepare to lift.
